At the Global Cargo Forum (GSF) annual meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka, GSF said it plans to cancel container shipping surcharges within five years.

GSF Secretary General Chris Welsh said: "I hope that through a series of actions, I will be exempt from container shipping surcharges by 2020."

The reason for the cancellation is because the surcharge is not included in the freight container shipping fee stipulated in the contract, and is often arbitrarily collected by shipping companies and freight forwarders. This will make them extremely anxious for customers around the world, that is, the shipper. Shipping companies and freight forwarders often threaten to refuse to ship containers unless the shipper pays a surcharge. This puts the shipper in a dilemma, either paying a high and unreasonable surcharge, or just watching the cargo stay.
